Best Management Practice For Auto Recycling Industry

The auto recycling industry plays an important role in reducing wastage and pollution in the natural environment. The actual process of recycling automobiles for their metals and/or parts is nothing new. For decades, people have relied on junk yards and salvage yards for accessing parts no longer in circulation and at a more affordable price. The methods used have not always been environmentally friendly. However, bodies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) have put in place regulations to ensure that these operations do not introduce pollutants into the air, water and/or soil. Thus, owners of such entities are expected to employ only the best management practices when running auto recycling businesses. This means that all permits should be obtained, regulations followed impeccably and inspections facilitated.

Acquiring Essential Permits

These particular operations can become potentially detrimental to the environment depending on how these unused vehicles are stored. A typical scrap yard will keep vehicles piled in stacks within a large outdoor area. Over time these automobiles may leak fluids that may enter the soil and contaminate underground water supply systems. Additionally, during the processing of metals for scrap, other harmful chemicals may seep into the soil. To prevent this, each entity should not function without a Storm Water Discharge Permit. The facilities are first inspected, and if the requirements are met then the permit will be granted. Where upgrades are essential, operators are expected to carry these out before the certification is issued. In addition, the DNR will provide information on how vehicles should be stored and perform regular inspections to ensure managers are following proper procedures.

Proper Management Of Sweat Furnaces

The sweat furnace in an auto recycling plant is considered a great environmental hazard if used incorrectly. It is essential to the processing of unused metals from the automobiles stored. At extremely high temperatures it can separate metals like aluminum, zinc and steel in their purest form which is then sold to manufacturers for use in other products. In theory, the process is laudable as it discourages the unnecessary wastage of natural resources. However, it can emit many pollutants into the atmosphere while in use. To reduce this risk, an auto recycling center must have an afterburner installed to limit such emissions. In addition, managers must ensure that logs are kept for documentation purposes and future inspections. The afterburner should operate at no less than 1600 degrees Fahrenheit to guarantee proper filtration of possible pollutants.

The auto recycling industry can only be beneficial to the environment when those that run such entities follow the correct procedures stipulated by the numerous regulations effected. By observing all the codes put in place, these businesses can be both profitable and environmentally friendly.

Which State had the Best Auto Industry

There is no doubt that Michigan State had the best auto industry in the United States: Detroit is nicknamed “The motor city” after all. The automotive industry in Detroit contributed to a strong labor force as well as steady economic development as this city is where the headquarters of the three biggest auto makers in the United States, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler were located. The recession had its biggest toll on the automotive industry in 2008/2009 as this time period saw these giants almost toppling and having to ask for bailouts and loans as well as having to make decisions to merge.

What toppled the Michigan auto industry?

It is no secret that the recession hit hard and fast in a time where corporate spending was irresponsible and downright reckless and people were led to believe that unlimited amounts of credit were available. The Detriot auto industry crashed because of the drastic increase in gas prices, the sudden crash of the credit companies, and the inability of auto makers to correctly assess the market thus producing expensive gas guzzlers instead of energy saving economical vehicles.

Ford

As far as automotive makers go Ford definitely packs a big punch; it ranks behind GM in the United States and fifth in the world. Ford in 2008 was credited with producing over 5 million vehicles and employing over 200,000 individuals worldwide. In 2009 these figures dropped as the economy crashed and almost took Ford with it.

General Motors (GM)

General Motors is now the world’s second largest automotive manufacturer ranking only behind Toyota of Japan. General Motors is responsible for 209,000 jobs in 157 countries, and it has always had a great responsibility to the city of Detroit, state of Michiga, and the overall American economy because of the massive amount of jobs it provides as well as its general economic contribution. 2008 and 2009 were disappointing years for this company because even though total vehicles sold in those years amounted to 2,980,688 and 2,084,492 respectively, these numbers were nowhere near the 4 or 5 million vehicles that General Motors is accustomed to selling.

Chrysler

In early 2009 overall sales reported by Chrysler world-wide were poor; sales of vehicles overseas declined by 30%. This drastic drop in sales as well as an overall poor performance prompted Chrysler along with General Motors and Ford to ask for a bailout from the government. Chrysler eventually went the way of merging with Fiat in June 2009 instead of continuing to pursue the government bailout.

Motorcycle Oils-Are Synthetics Best

Choosing the right motorcycle oil is important because the wrong oil can wreck havoc with your motorcycle's engine, clutch and transmission. Cost normally isn't a factor due the fact our motorcycle's are one of our most prized possessions.

One question that often comes up is, can you use automotive oils in a motorcycle? It's not advisable to do this because of the different additive package used to formulate motorcycle oils. Automotive oils have had to reduce the amount of zinc and other anti--wear additives because of the adverse affects they cause to catalytic converters.

Motorcycle oils are permitted to add significant amounts of anti--wear additives and you should always take advantage of this. Motorcycle oils will run hotter then car engines therefore are producing more friction. To keep wear to a minimum you will need the extra protection that motorcycle oils provide.

There really isn't much of an argument anymore on the benefits of synthetic lubricants.

Anyone still choosing to use petroleum oil in their motorcycle are really going to see a drop in performance. No matter what the cost, synthetics are a far better investment. Given the fact that synthetics lower operating temperatures this benefit alone is worth the extra cost.

There is also no truth to some motorcycle dealers telling you that you have to run their branded version of oil in your bike. Running an oil other than their branded version will not void your factory warranty. Do not get caught up in all the hype over private label oils. Do you really think a certain motorcycle manufacturer actually makes their own oil? Of course not, it's put out for bid and the cheapest bidder wins so be careful using these types of oils.

If your dealer insist that you use their oil while your bike is under warranty and you want to use another brand all you have to do is this: If you want to use brand x in your motorcycle and your dealer tells you no you can't, then politely ask them to put it in writing.

Federal Laws state that no warranty can be voided by verbal instruction only, it must be in writing.

First of all no dealer will ever do this because legally they know they can't. If however they did then according to the Magnuson-Moss Act you are entitled to their branded oil for free. Keep that in mind the next time your dealer tries to force you into using their brand of oil.

What should you look for in a motorcycle oil? Your biggest concern should be reducing operating temperatures. This is especially true of air cooled bikes that don't have the added advantage of being liquid cooled. Of course you always want to be certain your oil meets the proper specs listed in your owners manual. The corresponding specs can be found on the back of the motorcycle oil bottle.

Getting advice from other motorcycle owners that have done their own experiments is a great way to help you determine which oils work best. Talking with experienced motorcycle mechanic is one of the best way to determine which oil to use because they see first hand what oils do on the inside of an engine. Running a few simple test yourself can narrow your selection down fairly quickly. Stick with the synthetics because comparing petroleum oils will be a waste of time.

Finding the Best Automotive Help

Good news for motorists when things go bad is that an elite program for automotive repair facilities, founded by the group that certifies auto technicians, marks its tenth year.

The Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition Program (BSRP) was founded to specifically recognize those businesses with the highest commitment to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)’s goals. Businesses must have at least 75 percent of their repair personnel ASE certified in each area of service offered and submit to an annual review.

In addition to looking for a repair shop with certified technicians, ASE recommends that consumers start shopping for a repair facility before?they need one; look for a well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to?their own, and modern equipment in the service bays; and look for policies on estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and methods of payment.

There are some 1,500 such BSRP facilities, including repair shops, parts establishments and support businesses.

They’re committed to professional excellence and communicating quality to consumers.

These shops post an ASE sign and often display distinctive BSRP items, including a wall plaque, posters, customer handouts and window decals. The technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia.
